OSEP TOKAT: Economist, art collector, and independent researcher

The Disappearing World of Van (2022) is an overview of the history of Van with illustrations from its inception to present day. The author has journeyed to each of the sites that he has referenced in the volume which provides a detailed information on the landscape, geography, demography, craftsmanship, social life, customs, architecture, and religion of the Armenians who long inhabited the region.

Osep Tokat is an economist, art collector, and independent researcher. He was born in the village of Cermag (Zermek/Zermak) in Kiğı. At the age of seven, he immigrated to Istanbul with his family. He studied in Armenian schools in Istanbul and completed his university education in the field of economics. In 1986, he moved to Los Angeles with his wife and two children. He is the author of several books including Armenian Master Silversmiths (2005) and Keghi in Ruins (2015).

Tokat was honored by Catholicos Karekin II with the St. Gregory Medal for his efforts to revive Armenian schools and churches in Armenia. He is also the recipient of Fridtjof Nansen Foundation Gold medal and numerous accolades for his services to the Armenian community in Los Angeles.
